When did Times Square get it's name? The area was named Times Square on April 8, 1904. A few weeks later, after Times Square got it's name, the first electrified advertisement appeared on the side of a bank at the corner of 46th Street and Broadway Times Square had been very busy ever since. Subway lines opened in the same year which also caused the population growth in Time Square. The first celebration of New Years Eve was held. Ever since the ball dropped that year, the ball was dropped in the same place every year after that. Major buildings were built on Times Square. The New York Times newspaper's headquarter building is on Times Square. There are also great restaurants.
