This plant is the Kinnikinnick Shrub (Arcstaphylos uva-ursi). Kinnikinnick grows in hot, dry areas. Basically places with a lot of sun. It has reddish branches and oval shaped leaves. It's berries are eaten by many animals like deer, elk, and other large animals. They are also a good food source for some birds, as well.
